Investors assessing the impact of a major geopolitical conflict in the Middle East are evaluating potential effects on specific financial assets. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, three exchange-traded funds from Vanguard could see material influence from the ongoing turmoil.

Vanguard Energy ETF: High Oil Prices

The Vanguard Energy ETF, which holds oil and natural gas producers, is positioned as a potential beneficiary. The fund has an expense ratio of 0.09%, a yield of approximately 2.2%, and manages around $13 billion in assets. Its portfolio contains roughly 100 holdings, offering diversified exposure to the energy sector. About 39% of assets are in integrated energy companies, with nearly 23% in oil and gas exploration businesses.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has limited the supply of oil and refined products, supporting strong results for companies across the sector, including refiners. However, the ETF has already moved materially higher in 2026. Given the historical volatility of oil prices and their tendency to fall after steep increases, more conservative investors may see material downside risk when the conflict concludes.

Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF: Margin Pressure

In contrast, the Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF faces potential challenges. The fund has an expense ratio of 0.09%, a yield of 2.1%, and roughly $9 billion in assets invested in about 100 consumer staples companies. The Strait of Hormuz closure has reduced fertilizer availability, while high oil prices have increased shipping and production costs.

These rising costs could lead to contracting margins for the companies in the fund, potentially resulting in weak earnings. Investors appear to be anticipating this pressure, as the ETF has been trending lower since March.
