Roundup: Day One of 11U Futures Does Not Disappoint

Pool play kicked off on Thursday for the 11U Futures Invitational, with families traveling all across the country to Cary, North Carolina, for the highest caliber of amateur competition. The 24 games spread between Thomas Brook Park and Middle Creek Park featured returning champions, rising stars, and down-to-the-wire finishes, setting up an exciting weekend of baseball for the fans and parents in attendance.

Thomas Brooks Action

Original Florida Pokers of Parkland (FL) 2, Easley Baseball Club (TN) 1

Despite a spectacular performance from EBC’s Crew Blaylock at both the plate and the mound, the Pokers took game one of the day in a wire-to-wire thriller. Blaylock threw five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, and recorded two hits of his own including EBC’s lone RBI. The effort was not enough, however, as the Pokers broke through with two runs on Isaiah Mejia’s RBI single and Cannon Allen’s dash home on a passed ball. Kris Linares pitched 4.2 shutout innings to close out the game for the Floridians, and the Pokers prevailed 2-1.

Wildcatters Baseball (TX) 5, Top Tier (IL) 4

This back-and-forth affair featured three lead changes and 15 hits, with the Wildcatters ultimately prevailing in close fashion. Kaplan Bean kicked off the scoring for Top Tier with an RBI single in the first inning, but Reid Brodsky responded with a two-RBI single in the second to reclaim the lead for the Wildcatters. After Top Tier took the lead once again on RBIs from Bowen Davis and Derek Madsen, the Wildcatters put the game away for good with a three-spot in the fifth frame. Brodsky paced the squad from Texas with two hits and two RBIs in the victory.

Tennessee Elite (TN) 12, Team Elite (GA) 2

The Tennessee Elite bats were hot to open the weekend, taking down Team Elite 12-2 in six innings. Nine Tennessee hitters recorded a hit, including Laquan Archie Jr. who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Sebastian Cartaya who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. On the mound, Benji Bogner held it down for the first four innings, striking out four and allowing one earned run, before Bryce Weckman threw a scoreless final two.

USA Prime National (TX) 9, ZT National Prospects (CA) 8

After seven back-and-forth innings, USA Prime National got the 9-8 win over ZT National. With ZT’s winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, left fielder Cameron Connors made a heroic diving catch to secure the second out of the inning and help USA Prime hold onto the lead. To complement his defensive performance, Connors had a stellar day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. For ZT, eight players recorded hits on the day, including Matteo Covarrubias who went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs.

New Level National (WA) 6, Canes Midwest National (TN) 3

Fresh off a 10U Futures gold medal last weekend, the New Level National program’s 11U squad hit the ground running with a 6-3 triumph in its first game. The Washington team scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but an error in the third inning allowed Canes Midwest National to even the score. The teams traded runs over the next two innings and entered the bottom of the sixth tied at three. New Level’s Patrick Crawford then recorded his third hit of the game on an RBI grounder through the left side, giving his team the lead for good.

Scottsdale Dirtbags (AZ) 8, San Diego Show (CA) 3

Last year’s 10U champions, the Scottsdale Dirtbags, are off to a hot start, downing the San Diego Show 8-3 in their first game of the weekend. Noah Kirk, a member of last year’s gold medal squad, picked up where he left off, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Boaz Chop also recorded a multi-hit game for the Dirtbags going 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. On the mound, Mav’ric White and Connor Bailey allowed just three runs across six innings and fanned three batters.

Easley Baseball Club (TN) 6, Top Tier (IL) 6

EBC and Top Tier played their way to a stalemate in perhaps the best game of the day. After the teams traded runs in the first inning, Easley jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Crew Blaylock, Grey Maddux and Cruz Maggard. Top Tier bounced back with three straight RBI base-knocks of its own from Derek Madsen, Callen Bruesch and Maverick Harwood to knot the game at 4-4. Another clutch hit from Blaylock drove in two runs for Easley, seemingly putting the game away, but Top Tier rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game before time expired.

Wildcatters Baseball (TX) 10, Original Florida Pokers of Parkland (FL) 3

The Wildcatters improved to 2-0 on the day with their commanding seven-run victory over the Original Florida Pokers of Parkland. Despite falling behind 3-0 early, the Wildcatters managed to rattle off 10 unanswered runs on seven hits, including multi-hit efforts from Jerry Hennessey and Robinson Moncada. Cash Gonzalez drove in a team-leading three RBIs for the Texas squad while also pitching four scoreless innings on the bump. With the loss, the Pokers fall to 1-1 in pool play.

Team Elite (GA) 14, USA Prime National (TX) 6

With the help of an eight-run second inning, Team Elite secured a 14-6 victory over USA Prime National. The heart of the order came through at the plate as Andrew Rabern went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Dallas Leach went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, and Antonio Sucre went 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored. Prime National also had two players with multi-hit games – Kyais Scott who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and William Guevara went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Tennessee Elite (TN) 9, ZT National Prospects (CA) 3

In a game that was close until the very end, Tennessee Elite defeated ZT National Prospects 9-3, thanks to a five-run sixth inning. Garrison Weston led Tennessee’s offensive effort with his 3-for-3 performance at the plate and two RBIs, and Sebastian Cartaya delivered a stellar outing in relief with 3.2 innings and only one run allowed. It was Weston’s two-run double that opened the fifth-inning floodgates for Elite and put ZT away permanently. Tennessee improved to 2-0 with the win, while ZT suffered its second loss of the day.

Canes Midwest National (TN) 16, San Diego Show (CA) 10

This East-West showdown was the highest scoring game of the day, as Canes Midwest and the San Diego Show combined for 26 runs and 20 hits. The first inning alone featured a staggering level of offensive output, as Canes Midwest scored six runs in the top half and San Diego scored four runs in response. From there it was a track meet, and the Canes made it difficult to keep up. Cam Schekirke recorded his second and third RBIs for the Tennessee squad during a seven-run third inning that put the game away. Canes Midwest evened its record at 1-1 with the win, while the Show will be searching for its first pool play victory tomorrow.

New Level National (WA) vs. Scottsdale Dirtbags (AZ)

Both squads plated two runs a piece in the opening inning, but the Scottsdale Dirtbags ultimately pulled away for a 13-8 victory over New Level National. After holding New Level scoreless in the top of the second, the Dirtbags continued the momentum in the following frame, plating four more runs for a 6-2 lead. Not to be denied, New Level bounced back with five of their own to shift the lead in their favor 7-6. But the bats caught fire for Scottsdale in the third, and they responded with a seven run frame that New Level couldn’t match. For Scottsdale’s Boaz Chop, the number three proved to be lucky as he went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the contest, helping his team move to 2-0 on the day.
