If you invested $1,000 in gold & Bitcoin 10 years ago, here’s how much money you’d have today

Ten years on, both Bitcoin and gold have delivered gains, but one has left the other far behind, and for anyone who put $1,000 into each, the results are a study in contrasts.
Gold: the steady performer
According to the data, on September 9, 2016, gold traded at $1,328.15 an ounce. As of September 9, 2026, spot gold sits near $4,400 an ounce.
A $1,000 investment back then bought about 0.75 ounces, worth roughly $3,313 today, a gain of about 231%, or more than triple the original stake.
In short, $1,000 in gold in September 2016 would be worth about $3,313 today, more than triple your money in ten years.
Much of that surge is recent, with gold hitting record highs in 2026 on the back of heavy central-bank buying and safe-haven demand, as per the World Gold Council.
Bitcoin: the runaway winner
Bitcoin operated on a different scale. As per the historic data, it closed at $622.86 on September 9, 2016. Trading near $78,500 today, that same $1,000 would have bought about 1.61 BTC, now worth roughly $126,000.
That works out to a return of more than 12,000%, or about 38 times what the gold stake returned over the same period.
So about $1,000 in Bitcoin in 2016, would be worth around $126,000 today, a 126-fold return that turned pocket change into a small fortune.
Bitcoin has since evolved from an obscure experiment into a mainstream asset, embraced by corporations, governments and US spot ETFs that launched in January 2024.
Two very different rides
The paths there were nothing alike. Gold’s climb was gradual, and it now trades at all-time highs.
Bitcoin’s was turbulent, it has endured several drawdowns of more than 70%, and at around $78,500 it trades roughly 38% below its 2025 record.
Together, $2,000 split evenly between Bitcoin and gold would be worth roughly $129,000 now, nearly all of it from Bitcoin.
