‘I’m not done with politics’: Jennifer Konfrst announces retirement from Iowa House
Leading up to Election Day, Konfrst wants to help other Democrats get elected while she serves her district for the remainder of her current term.
DES MOINES, Iowa — Just weeks after dropping out of the race for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District seat, Iowa House Democrat Jennifer Konfrst announced she will be retiring from the Statehouse at the conclusion of her term.
“I’m not done with politics,” she said in a Facebook post. “But it’s time for me to find a place to serve where I can be as effective as possible. I look forward to taking time to consider my options and determine what is next.”
Konfrst said she had already prepared to step away from the Iowa House when she was running for Congress, but many of her supporters encouraged her to reconsider running for her House District 32 seat after she ended her Congressional bid. Her current term ends in January 2027.
“I’ve talked it over with several trusted friends and advisors, and my husband Lee and I have discussed it at length,” she said. “While I have loved my time in the Iowa House, it’s time to step back and keep my commitment to building the bench by leaving space for more leadership in HD32 and in the party.”
Leading up to Election Day, Konfrst said she wants to help other Democrats get elected while she finishes her term and continues working at Drake University.
“Our district is full of talented leaders and I look forward to voting for one of them this spring and fall,” she said. “Public service and leadership take many forms. It’s truly important that we all do everything we can. I’m excited to take the time to figure out what that looks like for me.”
