A consortium of global investors is preparing to invest over $200 million as cornerstone participants in the upcoming U.S. initial public offering of SoftBank’s PayPay, according to a Reuters report. The investor group includes Qatar Holdings, Visa, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

PayPay is targeting a valuation reaching up to $14 billion in the offering, which could represent the largest U.S. stock exchange listing for a Japanese company. The sources indicated that discussions are ongoing and no final commitment has been made, meaning the investment size, terms, and valuation could still change.

The digital payments provider plans to list on the Nasdaq next month. The offering was previously expected in December but was delayed by a prolonged U.S. government shutdown that affected regulatory progress. SoftBank anticipates that securing cornerstone investors will enhance the appeal of the IPO.

SoftBank’s Strategic Moves

The planned listing occurs as SoftBank Group is heavily focused on artificial intelligence. The conglomerate has committed substantial funds to OpenAI, following a prior investment completed in December. To support these AI investments, SoftBank’s chief executive has sold significant assets, including stakes in Nvidia and T-Mobile U.S.

The PayPay IPO could provide a cash infusion for SoftBank. It would mark the first U.S. listing for a SoftBank-majority owned business since Arm Holdings.

PayPay, established in 2018 as a joint venture, has become a widely used payment platform in Japan with approximately 72 million registered users. The company recently entered a partnership with Visa as part of its efforts to expand into the U.S. market.
