At-Large DC Councilmember Anita Bonds says she won’t run for re-election
Amid significant political shifts in DC, Anita Bonds, a key figure with over a decade on the city council, announces her departure.
WASHINGTON — After serving 13 years on the DC city council, at-large member Anita Bonds says she won’t run for re-election.
The announcement comes amid a number of shake-ups in DC politics.
Bonds’ announcement comes on the heels of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s announcement that she will step aside, as well as Ward 1 councilmember Brianne Nadeau’s announcement.
In addition, two other council members — Ward 2 councilmember Brooke Pinto and at-large councilmember Robert White — have announced that they will challenge incumbent Eleanor Holmes Norton for the DC congressional delegate post, casting their future on the council into question.
Meanwhile, Ward 4 councilmember Janeese Lewis George has announced she’ll run for DC mayor.
Bonds,80, has authored or co-authored more than 150 pieces of legislation during her time on the council.
She currently chairs the Committee on Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization, and marks among her priorities safe and affordable housing, as well as improving DC public education.
Bonds helped former DC mayor, the late Marion Barry, throughout his career, including contributing to his first campaign for the District’s Board of Education in 1971.
She also served on Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaign in 1984.
