Building futures through education | News

For more than a decade, Broward Meat & Fish has been quietly making a powerful investment – one that extends beyond business and into the future of young Jamaican women pursuing higher education in the United States.

Through its long-standing partnership with the Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) Scholarship Program, the family-owned company has helped open doors for dozens of students to pursue college degrees in fields ranging from science and medicine to law, education, and the arts. The collaboration, rooted in shared values and community service, has become a cornerstone of JWOF’s mission to uplift and empower young women of Jamaican heritage.

That legacy continued this year with the presentation of two $5,000 scholarships to outstanding students Abigail Jacquette and Kylin Reynolds, bringing Broward Meat & Fish’s total contribution to the programme to $70,000. The awards were presented at the JWOF Scholarship Luncheon held on March 28 at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, where family members, supporters, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the achievements of the recipients.

Abigail Jacquette, a senior at Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami, is preparing to begin the next chapter of her academic journey at the University of South Florida this fall. She plans to major in health sciences with a concentration in healthcare administration on the pre-medical track. Already, Jacquette has distinguished herself academically, earning an Associate of Arts degree from Miami Dade College through dual enrolment – an accomplishment that reflects both discipline and determination.

Also recognised was Kylin Reynolds, a senior at North Broward Preparatory School and an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate. Reynolds, who is currently deciding between the University of Florida and Emory University, plans to major in environmental science with a minor in marine ecology. Her interests extend beyond the classroom, blending a passion for sustainability with a love of dance. She envisions a future where science and the arts intersect, using creativity to raise awareness and inspire change.

In a message shared with the scholarship recipients, Broward Meat & Fish owners Denise Lujo and Ruben Lujo underscored the deeper purpose behind the company’s ongoing commitment.

“Your achievement is a testament to your hard work, determination, and the bright promise you carry into the future,” the statement read. “This scholarship is more than financial support – it is a recognition of your potential and a celebration of the goals you are pursuing. We believe in your journey and are inspired by your ambition.”

The couple also offered a reminder that while education creates opportunity, it is passion that gives life meaning and heritage that provides a sense of grounding and identity.

For JWOF, the partnership with Broward Meat & Fish represents more than sponsorship. It reflects a relationship built on trust, consistency, and a shared belief in the transformative power of education. Members of the organisation expressed deep gratitude for the company’s unwavering support over the years, noting that its impact extends far beyond financial assistance.
