California Orders Coinme To Refund $175K Over Crypto Kiosk Overcharges / Fresh Today / CUToday.info

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation said it has ordered Coinme, one of the state’s largest crypto kiosk operators, to refund an additional $175,000 to California consumers who were unlawfully overcharged, according to a department release.

The enforcement action builds on the agency’s ongoing efforts to hold digital asset companies accountable under the state’s consumer-protection rules.

“When a company overcharges consumers, we will do everything we can to help people get their money back,” DFPI Commissioner KC Mohseni said in the release, adding that digital asset firms are expected to follow state law.

Crypto kiosks, often located in grocery and convenience stores, allow customers to insert cash to buy and sell digital assets such as Bitcoin, with transactions typically instant and non-refundable. The DFPI said a recent examination found that Coinme charged fees and markups above statutory limits and omitted required information — including customer names and exchange sources — on more than 4,050 receipts.

The latest order follows earlier action by the DFPI on June 25, 2025, when the agency directed Coinme to pay $51,700 in restitution as part of a $300,000 penalty tied to violations of transaction-limit and disclosure rules under the California Digital Financial Assets Law. The department said it continues to urge consumers using crypto kiosks to understand fees and remain alert for scams involving cryptocurrency payments.
