An analysis from Yahoo Finance compares the Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF and the iShares U.S. Consumer Staples ETF. Both funds target U.S. companies within the consumer staples sector, but their methodologies and compositions differ.

Cost and Size Profile

The Vanguard fund charges a 0.09% expense ratio, which is lower than the 0.38% ratio of the iShares product. The iShares ETF, however, offers a dividend yield of 2.7%, compared to the Vanguard fund’s 2.2%. In terms of assets under management, the Vanguard fund is larger. The one-year return for the Vanguard fund was positive, while the iShares fund’s return was negative over the same period.

Portfolio Composition and Strategy

The iShares ETF primarily invests in consumer defensive stocks but also allocates a portion to healthcare and basic materials. It holds 54 stocks and its largest positions include prominent branded companies. The Vanguard ETF maintains a much tighter focus on consumer defensive stocks, with minimal exposure to other sectors. It holds 103 stocks, with major retail and consumer goods companies among its top holdings.

Performance and Risk Metrics

Over a five-year period, an initial investment in the Vanguard fund grew to a higher value than a similar investment in the iShares fund. The maximum drawdown for the funds over five years was also different. The beta for each fund indicates their historical volatility relative to a broad market index.

Structural Differences

Beyond the fee difference, the structural advantages of the Vanguard fund, including its ownership model and scale, contribute to its lower costs. This cost advantage is considered a persistent feature.
