SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Attorney General Rob Bonta is facing a complaint with the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission alleging improper use of funds from his 2026 reelection campaign.
The complaint was filed by someone identified as Rafael Ruthchild, a name that political insiders say they don’t recognize. A spokesperson for Bonta’s campaign dismissed the filing as “a silly political stunt — completely without merit,” saying the campaign does not view the allegations as credible.
The FPPC said it has received the complaint but has not opened a case. According to the agency, both parties requested an extension, which was granted, and the enforcement division will decide how to proceed by Dec. 19.
In a statement, the FPPC said that while it generally responds to sworn complaints within 14 days, that timeframe may be extended when parties provide additional information after filing. The agency said the process is meant to ensure due process by giving both complainants and respondents a fair opportunity to be heard.
