Hong Kong Stocks Fall on Tech Sector Weakness and AI Concerns | Market Update – News and Statistics

Hong Kong stocks fell on Tuesday, according to the South China Morning Post, tracking losses from Wall Street. This movement came as renewed concerns about the artificial intelligence race weighed on investor sentiment. The decline occurred on the first trading day in the Year of the Horse, a period when mainland markets saw a rally.

The Hang Seng Index dropped 0.6 percent to 26,913.68 at the market open. This decrease pared some of the 2.5 percent gain the index had recorded the previous day. The Hang Seng Tech Index fell by 1 percent. In contrast, mainland China’s CSI 300 Index rose 1.4 percent, while the Shanghai Composite Index jumped 1.2 percent.

Technology heavyweights were the major losers in the Hong Kong market. Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation dropped 1.7 percent. Baidu slid 1.6 percent. Alibaba Group Holding fell 1.5 percent, and Kuaishou Technology slipped 1.5 percent.

Losses on the index were limited by gains in some other sectors. AIA rose 1.5 percent. Techtronic Industries gained 1.5 percent. PetroChina added 1.5 percent and Zijin Mining advanced 0.8 percent.

The decline in Hong Kong followed an overnight drop in United States markets. All major US benchmarks fell after a viral Substack post from Citrini Research outlined a pessimistic scenario. The research suggested advances in artificial intelligence would disrupt white-collar employment. The S&P 500 Index fell 1 percent, the Nasdaq slid 1.1 percent and the Dow dropped 1.7 percent.

Elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, markets showed mixed performance. Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.9 percent and South Korea’s Kospi climbed 1.1 percent. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.2 percent.
