Small caps have enjoyed a comeback in 2026. Granted, some of the volatility seen in March has made it a bit of a wild ride, but small caps are still outperforming large caps by about 4% for the year so far (as of March 10).

Given how long small caps have underperformed the S&P 500, it is reasonable to think that they might finally be due for an extended run. An improved earnings outlook plus attractive valuations provide a nice setup as long as the current economic expansion does not get derailed.

Key Differences Between Major Small-Cap ETFs

Within the small-cap ETF category, two prominent funds are the iShares Russell 2000 ETF and the iShares Core S&P Small Cap ETF. While their names suggest similarity, they represent distinct investment portfolios.

The primary distinction lies in the underlying indexes each fund follows. The iShares Russell 2000 ETF is linked to the Russell 2000 index, which comprises the 2,000 largest stocks following the Russell 1000 large-cap index.

In contrast, the iShares Core S&P Small Cap ETF tracks the S&P 600 index, which consists of 600 stocks that follow the S&P 500 and S&P 400 Mid Cap indexes.

Portfolio Construction and Considerations

The iShares Russell 2000 ETF is characterized as a broad, inclusive option for gaining exposure to the small-cap segment. Its construction involves minimal screening beyond basic requirements for liquidity and tradability.

A noted characteristic of this approach is that the index includes a significant portion of companies that are not currently profitable. The iShares Core S&P Small Cap ETF, tracking a different and more selective index, represents a distinct portfolio of smaller companies.
