Apple unveils a more personal kind of Siri AI: WWDC takeaways

00:00 Speaker A

All right, Dan, you’re right there in Cupertino. What do you make of what you heard today, Dan? What do you make of our new and improved Siri?

00:08 Dan

Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, the the mood here was a little more subdued than you’ve seen uh at previous WWDCs. Basically, the uh takeaway was more or less, here’s kind of what we promised originally uh and now we’re offering it.

00:30 Dan

So, uh, you know, obviously we had the kind of announcement in 2024 where uh Apple had said, we’re going to launch a new version of Siri and that got uh pretty much delayed. Uh but this is kind of delivering on those promises and then some.

00:46 Dan

Uh the the main takeaway here, I think is that rather than something like Cha GBT or uh Anthropic’s Claude, what Apple is trying to do is make their AI more personal and upping the kind of privacy aspect of it.

01:03 Dan

So, they’re really pitching the idea that this is going to be context aware. Uh obviously, that’s huge if you’re an Apple user because you have your uh messages in there, your calendar in there, your email, all of your apps.

01:17 Dan

So we’ll be able to get access to all that, but they say key to that is that it’ll do so privately. So it’ll go either on device or in Apple’s Apple Cloud compute in the cloud.

01:31 Dan

And so it won’t be something where it’s going to be training uh any of their models on uh your content or anything along those lines you need uh for for uh sales or marketing. Uh I I think that really is what helps Apple set itself apart from competitors.

01:47 Dan

That that aspect of of privacy and then just working the way uh it’s advertised. Now, that’s going to be key. This is going to launch in September alongside iOS 27, uh iPad OS 27, uh Mac OS, uh Golden Gate, uh and the the variety of other operating systems that they have to offer.

02:05 Dan

But it’s going to be incredibly important for this to actually work out of the box because if people, you know, start trying to use it and after a couple of times it doesn’t do exactly what they want, well, then they might just chalk it up to being old Siri,

02:22 Dan

where, you know, basically works kind of as a way to ask what song is playing or set alarms and that’s not going to be good for Apple if that’s the case.

02:30 Dan

If they deliver on that, then boy, they could have something special here, especially given the fact that this is only going to be running on newer iPhones, some of the more advanced models in particular. And so that could get people to perhaps, okay, you know, maybe it’s time for me to upgrade from my, you know, iPhone 15 or iPhone 14.

02:44 Speaker A

Uh Dan, ultimately this this event, you know, it’s it’s for Apple’s millions of developers. What do you think they made of it? How excited do you think they are?

02:57 Dan

I think they genuinely came away from this pretty excited. Although, you know, to to be and they’re they’re they’re doing different events throughout the week. This is, you know, a week long event. I think the keynote in particular though, was less geared towards them and more geared towards consumers as well as industry watchers, you know, investors, uh analysts.

03:13 Dan

basically saying, look, we heard everyone loud and clear, here is what we’re going to do to deliver on that promise as I said from 2024 uh and and last year where we kind of got more Apple intelligence capabilities but nothing really that blew anybody’s socks off. I think that’s what they were trying to do here is just reset their their AI strategy and say, here’s what we have to offer and here’s why we believe that this is the best kind of path forward.

03:36 Dan

And so I think, you know, a lot of people uh may use uh ChatPT in the app or they may use uh Gemini or or Claude and I think you know, this is going to be something that is more built into the operating system. So you don’t have to go to a separate app. Although I will say, there is absolutely a dedicated Siri app now something they haven’t had before that you can have back and forth kind of chatbot like conversations.
