La Crosse County DA to review Elon Musk election interference complaints | Politics

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke will serve as special prosecutor in an election interference case against Elon Musk, according to an announcement from Brown County District Attorney David Lasee. 

In his announcement, Lasee cited a pair of complaints against Musk his office received in July from the election commission. The complaints come after the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) voted 5-1 finding probable cause that Musk violated state law when he made a social media post offering $1 million to people who voted in the 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court race. 

In March 2025, Musk handed out two oversized checks at a Green Bay rally for conservative candidate Brad Schimel, who was defeated by Susan Crawford.

According to Lasee, a conflict of interest in the case led his office to secure Gruenke as a special prosecutor to review the WEC’s complaints. 

“DA Gruenke is an experienced prosector, who is highly competent and well-respected throughout the state,” the announcement stated. “I am confident that DA Gruenke will carefully and professionally review this matter and arrive at an appropriate conclusion.”
