What Moves the Gold Price in Canada?

The gold price in Canada is set by two moving parts: the global spot gold price, which trades around the clock in U.S. dollars, and the USD/CAD exchange rate that converts it into Canadian dollars. A day when gold rises in U.S. terms but the loonie strengthens can leave the CAD gold price nearly flat — and a weakening Canadian dollar can lift the CAD price even when spot gold goes nowhere.

Beyond the exchange rate, gold responds to real interest rates, central bank buying and selling, safe-haven demand during market stress, and jewellery and investment flows. For Canadian investors, Bank of Canada rate decisions and commodity-driven swings in the loonie often matter as much as the headlines moving gold in New York or London.

To see how much of any move is gold versus currency, the Kitco Global Index (KGX) shows gold’s value with the US dollar’s influence stripped out.

Gold Value by Purity in Canada

Most gold jewellery isn’t pure 24-karat gold. Jewellery is commonly made in 10K, 14K or 18K gold, while investment-grade bullion is typically much purer. Royal Canadian Mint Gold Maple Leaf coins, for example, are made from 99.99% pure (.9999 fine) gold.

Gold purity can be expressed in karats, with 24 karats representing pure or nearly pure gold, or as fineness, which expresses the proportion of gold in parts per thousand. Jewellery and other gold items may carry a quality mark such as 417, 585, 750 or 916 indicating their approximate gold content.

Karat Purity Common Mark What It Typically Is Value per Gram Value per Troy Ounce
24K 99.9%+ 999 or 9999 Bullion bars and investment coins C$193.94 C$6,032.22
22K 91.7% 916 or 917 Some bullion coins and high-purity jewellery C$177.79 C$5,529.73
18K 75.0% 750 Fine jewellery C$145.46 C$4,524.16
14K 58.3% 585 Common jewellery C$113.13 C$3,518.59
10K 41.7% 417 Everyday jewellery C$80.81 C$2,513.62
9K 37.5% 375 Lower-purity and imported jewellery C$72.73 C$2,262.08

Gold price per gram by karat today: 24K C$193.94 · 22K C$177.79 · 18K C$145.46 · 14K C$113.13 · 10K C$80.81 · 9K C$72.73.

In Canada, 9-karat gold is the minimum quality permitted for a non-plated gold article carrying a gold quality mark under federal precious-metals marking rules.

For example, a 14K or 585 gold item contains approximately 58.5% gold by weight. Its estimated melt value is therefore based on the amount of pure gold it contains rather than its total weight.

The calculator above shows the current estimated melt value of gold by purity in Canadian dollars using the live gold spot price. These figures represent melt value, not necessarily the amount you will receive when selling. Dealers typically pay below melt value for scrap gold, while finished jewellery, collectible coins and investment products may trade above their underlying gold value.

Gold Price CAD FAQ

What is the gold price in CAD today?
The gold price in CAD shows the current spot value of one troy ounce of gold expressed in Canadian dollars. Kitco calculates it continuously from the live global gold price and the current USD/CAD exchange rate, and this page updates it throughout market hours.

What is the gold price per ounce in Canadian dollars?
It is the live global spot gold price converted into Canadian dollars for one troy ounce. The table on this page also breaks the same value down per gram, kilo, pennyweight, tola and tael.

Why is the gold price in Canada different from the U.S. gold price?
Both prices track the same global spot market — the difference is the currency. The Canadian price embeds the USD/CAD exchange rate, so moves in the loonie change the CAD gold price even when the metal itself is unchanged.

How often does Kitco update the gold price in CAD?
Continuously during active market hours. The live quote and chart on this page refresh in real time from Kitco’s market data feeds; outside market hours the page shows the most recent close.
