CFTC Weekly COT Report: Divergent Bets in Wheat, Corn, Soybeans, Energy and Metals – News and Statistics

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission released its weekly Commitments of Traders disaggregated futures-only report, according to the agency, covering positions as of September 8, 2026. The data, published on the CFTC’s Commitments of Traders page, breaks down open interest and positioning across producer and merchant, swap dealer, managed money, other reportable, and non-reportable categories for a range of agricultural, energy, and metals contracts.
In Chicago Board of Trade soft red winter wheat, open interest stood at 484,680 contracts. Producer and merchant positions were heavily skewed to the short side at 143,844 against 60,051 long, while swap dealers held 89,148 long versus 17,903 short. Managed money was nearly balanced, with 100,506 long and 95,633 short. Non-reportable long positions reached 451,411 against 35,347 short.
Hard red winter wheat on the Chicago Board of Trade recorded open interest of 305,216. Producer and merchant short positions totaled 131,324 against 16,173 long. Swap dealers were predominantly long at 83,054 versus 3,481 short, and managed money held 78,767 long against 30,091 short. Non-reportable long positions were 284,960, compared with 20,447 short.
Hard red spring wheat on MIAX Futures Exchange showed open interest of 79,371. Producer and merchant positions stood at 32,363 long and 64,471 short. Swap dealers held 6,892 long and 150 short, while managed money was 25,014 long and 2,689 short. Non-reportable long positions were 72,138 against 9,932 short.
Chicago Board of Trade corn had open interest of 1,803,323. Producer and merchant short positions dominated at 1,072,185 against 291,269 long. Swap dealers held 337,943 long and 27,632 short, and managed money was 491,034 long versus 76,575 short. Non-reportable long positions reached 1,603,809 against 127,120 short.
Chicago Board of Trade soybeans recorded open interest of 1,070,401. Producer and merchant positions were 291,532 long and 634,427 short. Swap dealers held 152,478 long and 61,133 short, while managed money was 293,215 long and 35,957 short. Non-reportable long positions totaled 1,000,358 against 48,169 short.
Mini soybeans on the Chicago Board of Trade showed open interest of 28,694, with producer and merchant positions at 5 long and 11,364 short. Swap dealer and managed money positions were zero on both sides. Other reportable positions were 25,016 long and 1,019 short, and non-reportable positions were 13,160 long and 2,896 short.
Chicago Board of Trade soybean oil had open interest of 601,961. Producer and merchant positions were 168,505 long and 382,295 short. Swap dealers held 92,652 long and 8,315 short, and managed money was 120,087 long against 28,376 short. Non-reportable long positions were 580,004 versus 34,428 short.
ICE Futures U.S. cotton No. 2 recorded open interest of 380,405. Producer and merchant positions stood at 46,637 long and 220,918 short. Swap dealers held 67,719 long and 26,692 short, while managed money was 108,667 long and 13,300 short. Non-reportable long positions were 372,055 against 18,853 short.
Chicago Mercantile Exchange lean hogs showed open interest of 283,094. Producer and merchant positions were 29,895 long and 42,439 short. Swap dealers held 73,615 long and 4,466 short, while managed money was 59,868 long and 89,502 short. Non-reportable long positions were 265,708 against 18,770 short.
Chicago Mercantile Exchange live cattle had open interest of 294,350. Producer and merchant positions were 41,414 long and 128,276 short. Swap dealers held 69,401 long and 4,168 short, and managed money was 82,287 long against 33,382 short. Non-reportable long positions totaled 261,323 versus 25,633 short.
New York Mercantile Exchange Mt Belv natural gasoline OPIS recorded open interest of 47,992. Producer and merchant positions were 45,434 long and 30,415 short. Swap dealers held no long positions and 14,920 short, while managed money was 35 long and zero short. Non-reportable long positions were 46,754 against 145 short.
ICE Futures Europe crude oil light sweet WTI showed open interest of 753,433. Producer and merchant positions were 405,540 long and 309,804 short. Swap dealers held 8,364 long and 82,587 short, while managed money was 14,482 long and 24,169 short. Non-reportable long positions reached 739,894 against 16,810 short.
New York Mercantile Exchange WTI financial crude oil had open interest of 192,025. Producer and merchant positions were 33,245 long and 42,679 short. Swap dealers held 49,323 long and 53,386 short, with managed money at zero on both sides. Non-reportable long positions were 140,913 against 29,251 short.
ICE Futures U.S. sugar No. 11 recorded open interest of 1,276,579. Producer and merchant positions were 241,917 long and 554,269 short. Swap dealers held 247,385 long and 148,062 short, and managed money was 331,765 long against 93,081 short. Non-reportable long positions were 1,220,331 versus 111,091 short.
ICE Futures U.S. coffee C showed open interest of 152,136. Producer and merchant positions were 37,215 long and 59,883 short. Swap dealers held 24,228 long and 21,200 short, while managed money was 37,050 long and 14,941 short. Non-reportable long positions were 146,384 against 7,391 short.
Commodity Exchange Inc. silver had open interest of 103,250. Producer and merchant positions were 4,616 long and 22,133 short. Swap dealers held 22,218 long and 49,609 short, and managed money was 21,148 long against 6,762 short. Non-reportable long positions were 95,885 versus 26,224 short.
Commodity Exchange Inc. copper #1 recorded open interest of 297,491. Producer and merchant positions were 28,049 long and 139,914 short. Swap dealers held 53,085 long and 45,864 short, while managed money was 98,007 long and 15,853 short. Non-reportable long positions were 289,118 against 20,541 short.
Commodity Exchange Inc. gold showed open interest of 411,227. Producer and merchant positions were 16,588 long and 47,549 short. Swap dealers held 14,542 long and 253,855 short, while managed money was 145,804 long and 10,832 short. Non-reportable long positions were 396,987 against 52,554 short.
Commodity Exchange Inc. micro gold had open interest of 87,451. Producer and merchant positions were 242 long and zero short. Swap dealers held 7,776 long and zero short, while managed money was zero long and 463 short. Non-reportable long positions were 62,746 against 42,782 short.
Coinbase Derivatives LLC gold one troy ounce recorded open interest of 12,246, with producer and merchant, swap dealer, and managed money positions all at zero on both sides. Other reportable positions were 4,454 long and 10,320 short, and non-reportable positions were 10,321 long and 7,791 short.
New York Mercantile Exchange gasoline RBOB showed open interest of 365,028. Producer and merchant positions were 94,208 long and 196,237 short. Swap dealers held 52,275 long and 37,672 short, and managed money was 106,371 long against 13,523 short. Non-reportable long positions were 353,095 versus 26,167 short.
