Edwardsville Futures crowns men’s doubles champions
Maxwell Exsted and Cooper Woestendick had won a Grand Slam junior doubles title together.
On Aug. 1, they added their first professional championship as a team.
The third-seeded Exsted and Woestendick beat Jack Anthrop and Noah Zamora 6-1, 6-1 in the Edwardsville Futures doubles final at Principia College’s Hexberg Indoor Tennis Center in Elsah.
The title was the first Futures doubles championship the pair has won together. Exsted and Woestendick previously teamed in one Futures event, losing in the opening round at Lakewood, California, in July 2025.
They had already proved successful on a larger junior stage, winning the 2024 Australian Open boys doubles championship. Exsted returned to win the Australian Open boys doubles title in 2025 with Jan Kumstat.
Overall, the championship was the sixth Futures doubles title for Exsted and the third for Woestendick.
Exsted and Woestendick began a busy day by defeating Nikita Filin and Brandon Carpico in the semifinals. They broke serve in the 10th game to claim the opening set, then broke again while taking a 4-1 lead in the second before closing out the victory.
Weather forced tournament officials to move the semifinals, originally scheduled for July 31, to Aug. 1. Both the semifinals and final were played indoors at Hexberg.
Anthrop and Zamora reached the final with a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), [10-8] semifinal win over top-seeded Ethan Cook and Leo Vithoontien.
Exsted entered the tournament ranked No. 331 in the world in doubles, while Woestendick was No. 584.
The championship concluded the doubles draw at the 15th Edwardsville Futures, the St. Louis region’s only professional tennis tournament.
