South Korean Investors Flock to Hong Kong Leveraged Chip ETFs Amid AI Rally – News and Statistics

Some individual investors in South Korea are increasingly directing their money toward Hong Kong-listed leveraged semiconductor ETFs, aiming to capture amplified gains from the artificial intelligence boom. This behavior is fueled by a fear of missing out on the rapid growth in chips and AI.

Analysts attribute this shift from the world’s 14th-largest economy to Hong Kong to leveraged instruments offered by financial institutions there, along with currency benefits, easier market access, and regulatory arbitrage. Still, the total count of South Korean retail participants using Hong Kong platforms remains limited.

Two chip-focused ETFs managed by Hong Kong’s CSOP Asset Management Limited, which follow blue-chip semiconductor firms Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have drawn notable retail interest in South Korea as investors seek to boost leverage during an upcycle fueled by the global AI wave. When these 2X products—designed to deliver twice the daily return of an underlying index or stock—debuted in May and October of last year, South Koreans could not access similar leveraged products within their own country.

The combined assets of these two ETFs exceed US$14 billion. CSOP, the largest ETF trader in Hong Kong, noted that South Korean retail investors, though a small share of overall traders, have been among the most active contributors to daily trading volume.

According to data from SEIBro, a portal run by the Korea Securities Depository, the top two holdings purchased by South Korean investors during the first five months of the year were leveraged products tracking SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, with cumulative net buys of US$311.8 million and US$211.1 million, respectively.
