The Dutch central bank moved 86.4 U.S. tons of gold out of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York between March and August 2026, redirecting the bullion to London in what it called a crisis readiness measure. That figure, equivalent to 78.39 metric tonnes, refers to New York alone rather than the widely circulating combined figure. De Nederlandsche Bank, known as DNB, disclosed the transfer publicly on Wednesday, and separately removed 7.35 metric tonnes from Ottawa. Taken together, New York and Canada gave up 86 metric tonnes, more than a quarter of the roughly 313 metric tonnes DNB held across those two North American vaults.
DNB framed the move in procedural language. “Due to the increasing geopolitical instability, the DNB is working on improving its crisis readiness. Improving the marketability of Dutch gold, and with that how quickly it can be used in crisis situations, is a part of that,” the bank said in a statement carried by NL Times. DNB President Olaf Sleijpen added: “We assume that we will never need to deploy the gold, but it is nevertheless necessary to strengthen our resilience and preparedness.”

Before the transfer, New York held 31.3% of Dutch gold reserves, Ottawa 19.7%, and London 18.1%. After the reshuffle, New York and Ottawa each sit at 18.5%, London jumps to 32.1% and becomes the largest single location, and the Netherlands itself holds 30.8%. Total Dutch gold reserves stand at 612.4 metric tonnes, valued at €72.2 billion, or roughly $83.6 billion, at the end of 2025. That valuation is not current. This specific transfer was worth approximately €10.1 billion to €10.3 billion, or about $10.7 billion to $10.9 billion.
