Ciena (CIEN) Stock Gets a $550 Price Target as AI Networking Opportunity Expands

Ciena Corporation (NYSE:CIEN) is positioned to benefit from the growing importance of optical networking as artificial intelligence infrastructure expands. As AI data centers scale, the need to move massive volumes of data between GPUs, servers, and data centers is driving demand for faster and higher-bandwidth optical connectivity.

Wall Street’s view on Ciena has shifted sharply. Targets were cut after earnings, then later raised following its 2029 outlook: see the analysis.

Optical Networking Opportunity

Connectivity within and between data centers remains a key challenge as hyperscalers build increasingly large AI clusters to support frontier large language models. According to Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani, Ciena Corporation (NYSE:CIEN) is well positioned to capitalize on this opportunity.

In a research note to investors on September 21, the analyst upgraded Ciena to an Outperform from In Line, buoyed by its prospects as a dedicated optical systems provider. The analysts also raised the stock’s price target to $550 from $375, insisting it offers an attractive way of gaining exposure to the optical networking space.

Ciena (CIEN) Stock Gets a $550 Price Target as AI Networking Opportunity Expands

The analyst expects the company to be one of the biggest beneficiaries as the data center buildout fuels demand for optical networking systems and high-speed interconnects needed to enhance data transmission between and beyond data centers. It already provides systems capable of transporting massive amounts of data across networks, including between data centers.

Its technology is becoming increasingly important as AI clusters expand beyond individual facilities. Ciena has also introduced its Vesta 200 6.4T co-packaged optical engine, designed for high-density AI networking.

Backed by robust optical networking technology, the company expects revenue to grow at an annual rate of about 30% over the next three years, with adjusted gross margin reaching approximately 50% by fiscal 2029.

The combination of AI-driven data traffic, hyperscaler infrastructure spending, and the transition toward higher-speed optical connectivity could provide Ciena with a significant growth runway.

Key Risks

While the company is benefiting from strong AI-related demand, the stock remains vulnerable to earnings or valuation reset. The market is already pricing in a prolonged AI-driven optical networking boom. Given extremely high AI expectations, the stock could come under pressure if hyperscaler spending falls short.

Supply constraints could also limit the company’s ability to capitalize on strong demand fully. While industrywide constraints can support backlog growth, shortages of components and other inputs could delay converting orders into revenue.

Competition represents another risk. The attractive economics surrounding AI infrastructure could encourage additional investment from networking and optical technology providers, potentially increasing pricing pressure and limiting Ciena’s share of the market.

Hedge Fund Positioning

Insider Monkey database indicates that institutional positioning has been building up around the stock. The number of hedge funds holding Ciena Corporation (NYSE:CIEN) shares rose to 81 in the second quarter, up from 73 in the first quarter. Arrowstreet Capital increased its stake in the company by 21% to $822.68 million, while AQR Capital Management increased its stake by 8% to $507.24 million.

Meanwhile, the amount of Ciena shares sold short dropped to 3.35 million as of August 31 from 3.71 million as of July 31, translating to a short interest of 2.36%.

The Verdict

Ciena Corporation (NYSE:CIEN) offers investors exposure to the growing demand for optical networking amid robust AI data center buildout. The company’s optical systems and next-generation technologies could position it to benefit from the continued expansion of AI infrastructure.

The key question for investors is whether Ciena can translate the rapid expansion of AI-related networking demand into sustained revenue and margin growth without market expectations running too far ahead of fundamentals.
