Another season has arrived for coach Josh Heupel and his Vols. His squad will be subject to a tougher schedule as an SEC opponent, but any surprising bit of success could bode well for Tennessee. Many fans may not anticipate them being able to beat Texas or Alabama, but a shocking win with an otherwise strong season could push them into the fray of the College Football Playoff conversation.
The Volunteers may not originally appear as a worthy SEC team to bet on, but good value has shown itself in some of the team’s 2026-27 season props.

Here are the best future bets for Tennessee in 2026.
Will Tennessee make the College Football Playoff?
Prior to Heupel’s arrival in Knoxville, the Volunteers were chasing past glory, reminiscent of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The team may have squeaked into a bowl matchup with a record just above .500, if at all, and the school was hit with recruiting violations during the 2019 and 2020 seasons under Jeremy Pruitt.
The whirlwind that came with being a mid-ranking SEC team has somewhat been quelled under Heupel, especially after the team made its first College Football Playoff appearance in 2024. The Vols also would have made the expanded playoff format in 2022, with a stellar 11-2 record that hadn’t been seen in the Volunteer State since 2001.
This season, Tennessee looks to have an outside chance of making the final 12-team College Football Playoff. A double-digit amount of wins may be hard to come by, especially with nine games in a row against SEC opponents this season.

Best Tennessee playoffs bet
As an SEC team, Tennessee is one of the better teams across the country. Playing devil’s advocate, however, has shown it is an uphill climb to snatch one of the 12 College Football Playoff spots. The last time the Volunteers made a playoff came in 2024 as a No. 9 seed, when they were blown out by the No. 8 seed and eventual champion Ohio State, 42-17.
Tennessee’s record that season was 10-3, a mark that likely won’t be replicated this upcoming season. Double-digit wins seem to be a significant qualifier in determining which 12 teams make the College Football Playoff. For the Volunteers, this may be just out of reach, especially in the crowded SEC field and a schedule featuring both Texas and Alabama. With such heavily juiced odds to miss the playoffs though, we’d recommend against a wager on this market.
Best Tennessee conference bet:
It may be a nail-biting wager to place on a team that isn’t regarded as one of the SEC’s best teams, but the Volunteers do have some good value heading into the 2026-27 season. Tennessee has matchups against five teams that finished in the bottom seven in terms of conference record.
While a win against Texas or Alabama may be difficult to come by this season, road wins against Arkansas and South Carolina are certainly in the realm of possibility. The Vols may need to win at least one game against LSU or Vanderbilt to close out their season in order for this line to hit, but the odds show this team is capable of tallying five regular-season wins against SEC opponents.

Tennessee win total prediction
One of the misfortunes in playing SEC football is the tough schedule each conference team is subject to; this includes Tennessee. Last season, the Volunteers finished with an 8-4 record in the regular season (along with an additional 30-28 loss to Illinois in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl). Nestled into that loss column is a narrow 44-41 overtime loss to No. 6 Georgia and a one-score 33-27 loss to No. 18 Oklahoma.
For the fifth season in a row, Tennessee will have a new quarterback under center. This could mean the team may need to make some adjustments during the season. Coach Heupel told Vols Wire that the team’s starting quarterback position “is open,” and a battle is underway between redshirt junior transfer Ryan Staub (formerly at Colorado) and five-star prospect Faizon Brandon, who chose Tennessee over Alabama, LSU, and North Carolina State.
The Volunteers may have to heavily rely on running back DeSean Bishop, who was a thousand-yard rusher who reached the endzone 16 times last season. If Bishop can negate the potential learning struggles Tennessee’s Week 1 starting quarterback may have, the Volunteers may be able to stay afloat and steal some SEC games against better opponents on paper.

Win total best bet
The Volunteers’ win total currently sits at 7.5 wins for the 2026 season. It will be a close call on whether Coach Heupel’s group can hit this line, but there certainly is an avenue for this to cash. Before the storm that is Tennessee’s nine SEC matchups in a row to close out the season, the team will open up with three games against non-conference opponents. Picking up three wins will be vital, including an early test against Georgia Tech.
Tennessee’s offense will have a lot of new faces this year, including a new quarterback. Heupel will need to preach a vast improvement on the defensive front, as it may not matter how many points the Volunteers can score if they allow the same yardage they did last year (396.9 total yards per game).
If the Volunteers begin the season 3-0, they will need five wins against their SEC schedule to his this mark, which is possible. With home matchups against Texas and Alabama on the horizon, the Vols will need to start the season with some wind behind their sails to win those games, most likely.

Tennessee National Championship odds
Tennessee currently has longshot odds to win the national championship under the Las Vegas lights. The road to get there will be statistically one of the hardest throughout college football as a member of the SEC. Among their conference, the Volunteers have the ninth-best odds to win the 2026-27 championship.
With former quarterback Joey Aguilar now in the NFL, Tennessee will be without their gunslinger who threw for 3,565 yards last season (12th in NCAA) and led his team to the sixth-best passing offense across the sport. The Volunteer defense will also need a resurgent campaign after allowing 396.9 total yards to opposing offenses.
In other words, a championship in Knoxville is highly unlikely, and the team will need a significant run to make some noise this season.

Tennessee schedule analysis
ESPN ranks Tennessee’s schedule 14th in America, which ranks in the bottom half of the SEC. The Volunteers’ season begins on an easier note with games against Furman and Kennesaw State, along with an early test with Georgia Tech in between. After those first three games, Tennessee’s true colors will show through nine SEC conference games in a row.
Their first conference matchup is a game against the Texas Longhorns, who will likely have Arch Manning under the helm for one last season. After hosting the Longhorns, the Vols will take on Auburn at Neyland Stadium. Tennessee will have the luxury of hosting their tougher matchups against Alabama, Kentucky, and LSU, but they will have to travel to the boisterous home sites of Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt.
Last season, the Volunteers finished with a 4-4 record against SEC opponents in the regular season. That mark will need to be better for a team looking to emerge from a crowded conference that is widely regarded as the best in the sport.
