Trump highlights agriculture policies during roundtable event in Chippewa Falls | National Politics

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WKBT) — President Donald Trump spoke with farmers in Chippewa Falls at Custer Farms during a roundtable event, highlighting policies Republicans say are aimed at supporting agriculture ahead of the midterm elections.
“Every day my administration is fight to protect the jobs and livelihoods of our great farmers. I love our farmers, our growers,” President Trump says.
The president’s visit comes as the farm bill moves through the Legislature. Farmers also raise concerns about rising costs, including fuel and fertilizer, as the war in Iran drives prices higher. President Trump tells the group those costs will drop soon.
“You’ve seen fertilizer go up and you’ve seen energy go up, it’s going to come down to where it was or lower, you’ll be very happy,” President Trump says.
Trump is greeted by a mix of protesters and supporters outside the event. Denise Sprunk, who supports the president’s visit, says she appreciates the outreach.
“I think it’s great he’s trying to connect, trying to connect with the rural people with the farmers, trying to connect with America,” Sprunk says.
Democratic candidates from around the state also demonstrate, criticizing Trump’s handling of costs and the economy.
“We’re hurting and we’re angry, you know Donald Trump ran on lowering the cost of everything from groceries to gas and what has he done, he’s made it impossible for farmers to even sell the food that they grow and jacked up the price of everything from gas to groceries,” says Sen. Kelda Roys, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate who represents Wisconsin’s 25th Senate District.
William Garcia, chair of the 3rd Congressional District Democrats, echoes those concerns.
“Everytime we go to pump gas, every time we see how much prices are rising, how much the policies are failing us,” Garcia says.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Missy Hughes says Trump’s trade wars have reduced farmers’ ability to sell their crops.
“What Donald Trump and Tom Tiffany and Derrick Van Orden have been doing to the farmers is so destructive. Between the cost of diesel, tariffs making us lose markets, bank credit tightening up, we’re just really seeing farmers struggle across Wisconsin,” Hughes says.
Trump was joined at the event by Reps. Derrick Van Orden and Tom Tiffany, along with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Wisconsin athletes’ Jordan Stolz and Joe Thomas.
