Why timing matters for AI investors

Does it really matter for the broader markets if Anthropic IPOs before OpenAI? And should investors really care? Amanda, over to you.
00:06 Amanda
Well, I think timing always matters when you’re trying to access the capital markets, right? You want to know what the dynamics are, you want to know what investor sentiment looks like, you want to know what the trajectory of the fundamentals are, uh to make sure that you have a successful IPO.
00:30 Amanda
Do I really care? Do you think investors really care about whether or when they go public? Not really. I think from a public uh equity market standpoint, I don’t think the market needs it per se to keep the rally engaged, but it will def- definitely be another element of a gut check or sentiment check on where we are in the innings of the AI cycle.

I mean, I know AI cycle. I mean I know of course these companies are are still private and not asking for any picks here. But like are are these the type of models that retail investors or or the type of companies that retail investors should get excited about? At least with SpaceX, I understood it. It’s Elon Musk, they’re uh putting rockets on the sky, there’s Starlink. You know, I I imagine you’re going to go to the prospectuses of each of these companies when that time comes and really come away thinking, I don’t know what the hell they do.
01:13 Amanda
Well, hopefully we come away with more insight than that. Uh that that’s that’s not a good investment thesis to start with I have no idea what they do. Um but I would say, you know, retail investors have been historically and will continue to be clamoring for how to gain access and exposure to the first leg or an early innings leg of an innovation cycle. These certainly fall into that category.
01:40 Amanda
It’s always tricky when a lot of these innovations sit in private markets and stay there for a long time because it’s it feels like a retail investor has missed the boat. So I expect there to be a lot of retail investor interest just like there was with SpaceX and any of the number of other AI themes and plays that are sitting out there today.
